Research Problem
Older adults are particularly vulnerable to age-related diseases that accelerate neuronal dysfunction, neuronal loss, and cognitive decline, often resulting in impairments that interfere with everyday functional abilities. As these symptoms gradually progress, many individuals become increasingly at risk of developing serious neurocognitive disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, significantly impacting quality of life and independence.
Design Solution
Seizing the Moment is an ergonomic painting system designed to help individuals with dementia express emotions and connect with others through temporary, water-based art. Featuring an embedded e-ink display that delivers a new painting prompt each day, the device encourages creativity, non-verbal communication, and moments of social interaction. The daily drawings also offer opportunities for gentle cognitive tracking and training. While a physical prototype was built, the accompanying digital system remains conceptual, outlining future potential for expanded therapeutic engagement.
